In a momentous ceremony at Black Star Square on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, John Mahama was officially sworn in as President of Ghana for a second term. Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo administered the Oath of Office, cementing Mahama’s position as the sixth President of the Fourth Republic.
This historic event followed Mahama’s resounding victory in the December 2024 elections, where he garnered 56.55% of the votes. He joins the ranks of former Presidents Jerry John Rawlings, John Agyekum Kufuor, John Evans Atta Mills, and William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
A Unique Political Journey
Mahama’s political journey is unparalleled in Ghana’s history. After completing his first term as the fourth President of the Fourth Republic, he lost his re-election bid in 2016 to Nana Akufo-Addo. However, his triumphant return in 2024 makes him the first Ghanaian President to lose re-election and later be voted back into office.
During his inaugural address, Mahama emphasized national unity, progress, and accountability as the cornerstones of his administration. He vowed to prioritize economic recovery, job creation, and policies aimed at improving the welfare of all Ghanaians.
Historic First: Ghana’s First Female Vice President
The inauguration also celebrated another great milestone: Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as Ghana’s first female Vice President. Her ascension to the second-highest office in the land represents a significant leap in gender equality and the empowerment of women in leadership.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, a respected academic and advocate for education, took the Oath of Allegiance and Vice Presidential Oath ahead of Mahama. Her tenure is expected to spotlight education reform and youth empowerment, aligning with the administration’s broader vision for inclusive growth.
A New Chapter for Ghana
The swearing-in ceremony marked the beginning of a new chapter for Ghana, reflecting the country’s commitment to democratic values and political inclusivity. The atmosphere at the Black Star Square was electric, with citizens and dignitaries alike celebrating the dawn of a new era.
President Mahama and Vice President Opoku-Agyemang now embark on their mission to lead Ghana towards a future of unity, prosperity, and progress.
