In a remarkable show of dedication, 65-year-old philanthropist Alhaji Yakubu Ayaana has set out on an extraordinary 250-kilometer journey on foot from Kumasi to Accra. His trek is a personal tribute to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following his decisive victory in the December 2024 elections.
Alhaji Yakubu began his journey in Kumasi, the Ashanti Region’s capital, with the aim of reaching Accra in time for Mahama’s swearing-in ceremony on January 7, 2025. This symbolic walk reflects his admiration for Mahama’s leadership and is a celebration of Ghana’s enduring democratic values.
A History of Symbolic Walks
This is not Alhaji Yakubu’s first remarkable journey. In 1997, he undertook a similar walk to honor former President Jerry John Rawlings during his second-term inauguration. Additionally, in 1999, he organized a 16-kilometer peace and health walk in Tamale on Independence Day, promoting national unity and healthy living.
Celebrating Mahama’s Return
John Dramani Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2017, secured a resounding victory in the December 2024 elections, garnering 56.55% of the vote. His return to the presidency has reignited hope for economic stability and progress amidst Ghana’s current challenges.
For Alhaji Yakubu, this walk is not just a test of endurance but also a heartfelt gesture to show support for the incoming administration and its promise of renewed leadership. His journey embodies the spirit of patriotism and optimism that many Ghanaians share as they look forward to the next chapter of Mahama’s presidency.
