The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has taken significant steps to uphold the integrity of its examinations by cancelling or withholding the results of thousands of candidates involved in malpractices during the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
Cancelled Results
In a statement, WAEC announced the following actions:
- Cancellation of Subject Results: Results of 4,108 candidates were cancelled for bringing prohibited materials, such as notes, textbooks, and printed documents, into examination halls.
- Cancellation of Entire Results: A total of 483 candidates had all their results cancelled due to possession of mobile phones, a violation of WAEC’s strict regulations.
Withheld Results
WAEC has also withheld results pending further investigation:
- Subject Results Withheld: The subject results of 781 candidates are under review for suspected offences.
- Alleged Collusion: Results from 319 schools have been flagged for alleged collusion and are being investigated. Depending on the outcomes, these results may either be released or cancelled.
Commitment to Examination Integrity
WAEC reiterated its commitment to ensuring fair and credible assessments, expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their support during the examination process.
John K. Kapi, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC, stated:
“We are determined to maintain the highest standards of integrity in our examinations. We urge candidates and schools to uphold ethical practices and avoid malpractices.”
Zero Tolerance for Malpractice
These actions highlight WAEC’s zero-tolerance policy on examination irregularities and serve as a strong warning to candidates and institutions to prioritize ethical behavior in future examinations.
