For the first time, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clinched the Dome Kwabenya parliamentary seat, marking a historic shift in the traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP) stronghold.
Faustina Elikplim Akurugu, the NDC candidate, emerged victorious in the closely contested race, securing 50,967 votes against the NPP’s Mike Oquaye Jr., who garnered 50,669 votes.
Electoral Commission Declares Results
The Electoral Commission (EC), led by Chairperson Jean Mensa, officially announced the results during an emergency Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on December 31, 2024.
“Today, we are pleased to announce that the proceedings and collation at the Dome Kwabenya Constituency have come to a close… The outcome reflects the will of the people as expressed at the polls,” said Jean Mensa.
This announcement underscored the EC’s commitment to upholding transparency and ensuring the election results truly represented the voters’ choice.
A Significant Political Shift
The seat, previously held by Sarah Adwoa Safo of the NPP since 2012, had long been considered a bastion of NPP support. Akurugu’s victory signifies a changing political landscape, reflective of broader gains by the NDC in constituencies like Adansi Asokwa and Sekondi during the 2024 elections.
The Road Ahead
Faustina Akurugu’s win is not only a personal milestone but also a symbol of the NDC’s growing influence in areas once dominated by their rivals. Her leadership in Dome Kwabenya will now be watched closely as she takes up the mantle of representing a constituency undergoing political transformation.
