A Member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Team, Hamza Suhuyini Sayibu, has clarified that President John Mahama has not entirely ruled out the possibility of extending Ghana’s Extended Credit Facility (ECF) agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Media Reports Misleading
Speaking on TV3’s New Day, Hamza Sayibu described media reports suggesting that President Mahama has rejected an extension of the IMF programme as misleading.
“The President never ruled out an extension. He only meant that Ghana remains committed to achieving its economic objectives, and no final decision has been made yet.”
Mahama’s Stance on the IMF Programme
During an interview with Bloomberg at the Munich Security Conference, President Mahama reaffirmed his government’s commitment to the current IMF programme but did not discuss an extension.
“We’ve not talked about an extension of the programme. We are determined to continue with this programme,” he stated.
Fiscal Discipline Remains a Priority
Hamza Sayibu emphasized that President Mahama understands the political and economic implications of his statements and would not use terms like “reject” lightly in discussions involving multilateral financial institutions.
“Economic decisions influence political outcomes and vice versa. The President is fully aware of this dynamic.”
Meanwhile, the government remains focused on fiscal discipline and prudent financial management, ensuring that Ghana meets its economic goals under the current IMF agreement.
