The year 2024 was a defining moment for Ghanaian women in sports, marked by groundbreaking achievements across various disciplines. It began with the Black Queens earning their spot at Morocco 2025. Although they narrowly missed out on the Paris Olympic Games following a challenging match against the Copper Queens, their journey under Nora Hauptle was celebrated for their impressive style of play and remarkable goal-scoring capabilities.
As the Queens celebrated their qualification, the Black Princesses stepped into the limelight. Under the guidance of Coach Yussif Basigi, the Princesses secured victory at the Accra 2023 Games, with jubilant scenes featuring the Casfordians serenading the team after their win.
In athletics, Rose Amoanimaa Yeboah made headlines with a historic leap. Despite initially falling short of the Olympic qualifying mark of 1.94m, her persistence paid off when she cleared 1.97m months later, setting a national record and securing her spot at the Paris Olympics.
In domestic football, the Army Ladies defeated Police Ladies 1-0 in the FA Cup final, with Deborah Opoku’s decisive goal earning them their first-ever title. Meanwhile, Ampem Darkoa continued their dominance in the Women’s Premier League, clinching back-to-back titles over rivals Hasaacas Ladies.
Thelma Baffour etched her name in history by becoming the second Ghanaian woman to win the CAF Women’s Champions League, leading TP Mazembe to triumph. She followed in the footsteps of Blessing Shine Agbomadzie, who achieved the same feat with ASFAR in 2021.
In boxing, Abigail Quartey achieved a monumental milestone, claiming the WIBF Super Bantamweight title at the Bukom Boxing Arena, making her Ghana’s first female world boxing champion.
Closing out the year, Sandra Boakye broke new ground as the first female coach to lead a male team to the finals of the Ashanti Regional Inter-Schools and Colleges competition. Although her team, SIMMS Commercial High School, ultimately fell to Osei Kyeretwie, her achievement was nothing short of historic.
The Black Maidens wrapped up the year with a triumphant win, hosting and claiming the inaugural WAFU Zone B U-17 Cup. Their victory was a fitting conclusion to a year where Ghanaian women in sports consistently broke barriers and led the way forward.
