The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the University of Ghana to reduce residential facility fees by 25%, bringing the cost down from GHC 3,000 to GHC 2,500 for both fresh and continuing students.
This directive was issued during a meeting with the university’s management, including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nana Aba Amfo and the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) at the Education Ministry in Accra on February 6.
Vice-Chancellor Commits to Fee Reduction
During the engagement, Minister Haruna Iddrisu emphasized the need for greater student involvement in fee decisions.
“I have asked the Vice-Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25% and ensure future engagements with the SRC before any fee adjustments,” he stated.
Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, in response, assured the minister and students of the university’s commitment to complying with the directive.
“We have listened to the concerns of the Minister and our students. We can afford to implement the 25% reduction across the board, and moving forward, there will be adequate student engagement on such matters,” she assured.
SRC Demands Refund for Early Payments
The SRC President, Maradona Adjei Yeboah, welcomed the reduction but called for a refund for students who had already paid the full GHC 3,000 fee.
“We appreciate the reduction, as it eases the financial burden on our parents. However, there should be a refund for those who have already paid the full amount,” he said.
According to university management, about 80% of students have already paid their residential facility user fees.
Looking Ahead
The fee reduction is expected to provide financial relief to thousands of students and their families. Discussions on possible refunds for early payers are ongoing.
