The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has announced the successful restoration of 126 streetlights across all 29 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.
Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on March 25, 2025, she confirmed that this effort is part of the government’s reset agenda to enhance visibility and security across the capital.
“Today, March 25, marks exactly my 50th day in office, and I am pleased to report that significant progress has been made. A total of 126 streetlights have been restored, covering highways, town roads, and community roads across the 29 MMDAs in the region,” she stated.
Key Areas Benefiting from the Initiative
Some of the major roads and highways that have seen restored lighting include:
- George Walker Bush Highway
- Nima Highway
- ACP to Pokuase
- Independence Avenue (Jubilee House)
- New Town Junction to Ashaiman Road
Challenges and Ongoing Works
The Minister noted that some areas, including the Tema Motorway and Accra-Tema Beach Road, could not have their streetlights restored due to ongoing construction projects.
Additionally, maintenance work is in progress on:
- N1 Highway (Tetteh Quarshie to Kasoa)
- N6 Highway (Achimota to Amasaman)
- N4 Highway (Shiashie to Oyibi)
Crackdown on Streetlight Cable Theft
Minister Linda Ocloo raised concerns over the theft of streetlight cables, which she described as a major setback in keeping the streets well-lit.
“The incidence of theft is a major challenge affecting sustainability. Anyone caught stealing these vital components will face severe consequences. We must all be vigilant and report suspicious activities,” she warned.
She also directed Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to establish security measures to track and curb such criminal activities.
The initiative marks a significant step toward improving safety, security, and infrastructure development in the Greater Accra Region.
