
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has officially confirmed the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, effective January 29, 2025.
In a statement, ECOWAS acknowledged the decision of the three military-led nations and assured that regional solidarity and people-centered policies remain a priority.
Key Provisions Following the Exit:
- Free Movement & Residency Rights:
- Citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger will continue to enjoy visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within ECOWAS member states.
- Recognition of National Documents:
- ECOWAS member states should continue to recognize national passports and identity cards bearing the ECOWAS logo for citizens of the three countries.
- Trade and Economic Engagement:
- Goods and services from the exiting countries will still be treated under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies until further notice.
- Support for ECOWAS Officials:
- ECOWAS will provide full cooperation and support for officials from the three nations still working on regional assignments.
